Why it works

The lather from Miners Natural Shaving soap is dense, rich and long lasting. It permeates facial hairs and causes each follicle to soften and lift away from the skin. This allows for a closer and more comfortable shave with fewer knicks, cuts, or razor burns.

Because of their high content of fats (from sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate and superfatting - the technique we use to create a nourishing bar), Miners Shaving Soap lays down an ultra-thin protective layer over the skin. This layer helps your razor blade glide more smoothly over the skin while lubricating it and thereby reducing irritation.

Shaving Soaps are filled with emollients and nourishing oils from the sodium tallowate (and sodium cocoate, and glycerin) that leave your skin feeling moisturised and super soft. Because the process of shaving can dry out your skin due to the razor blade essentially scraping away your natural oils, our soap helps to restore the natural protective layers on your face.

Why a 60-day slow cure?

We slow-cure our Miner Natural Shaving Soap for at least sixty days. This process allows us to work a lower temperatures to create a harder and more gentle bar.

This means that it lasts longer, especially when exposed to water (i.e left in the shower) and helps to create a gentler bar on your skin.

While this approach may take us longer to make a bar, it gives you a barber-level shave with a soap that is gentle enough to use daily, all over your body.

Ingredients

Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate, Aqua, Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Silicate

85g bar

How the ingredients work

Miners Shaving Soap contains sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate and glycerin.

Sodium cocoate and sodium tallowate both provide a rich lather, moisturising and nourishing properties and help lubricate the skin.

Glycerin (a wonder product in soap making) makes this soap perfect for shaving -

Glycerin is a humectant, which means it helps to draw moisture into the skin. This means the Miners Natural Shaving Soap keeps your skin hydrated, even when it’s damaged by shaving.

Glycerin is a safe ingredient used in food and cosmetic products. It’s a non-irritating and non-toxic ingredient, which makes it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Glycerin can also help to improve the appearance of dry, rough, and damaged skin, as it helps to repair and restore the skin's natural barrier.

And… Glycerin can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as it helps to plump and hydrate the skin.

How to use

Lathering up a shaving soap is simple.

  • Start with a wet shaving brush
  • Move the brush in small circles around the soap until enough soap has formed into bubbles
  • Continue to move the brush in small circles as the soap continues to lather and the bubbles get smaller and thicker
  • When the lather is thick enough then use the brush to apply it to your face
  • If you intend to use multiple passes to shave then make enough lather to continue shaving (when expert Barbers use Miners they only need to do one pass as it the lather lasts longer than normal shaving cream).

How it's made

We use the traditional Cold Process method for making soap - this gives us complete control over the ingredients, standards and process allowing us to create a better product for our customers.

After the soap is made, it is allowed to cure for at least 60 days. This creates a harder bar, which lasts longer, produces a better lather and is more gentle on your skin.

As this is handmade soap, there may be some imperfections in the bars.

Measurements

Each bar measures approximately 70 x 70 x 19mm. They weigh approximately 85g.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Why a sixty-day slow cure?

As mentioned, we slow-cure our bars for at least 60 days - twice as long as our standard natural soaps. This means we can create an even harder, longer lasting bar that retains its structure in high-moisture environments (the shower).

How do you lather the soap in a mug?

With Miners Shaving Soap, you don't need to - the shape allows you to create a lather straight off the bar. But some people like to lather their soap into a mug instead of directly on the bar. The process is the same, except instead of continuing to lather on the bar, you move this later with a little water into a mug and continue the process until you have a rich lather, ready for your face.

How do you use shaving soap and a brush?

To achieve a luxurious lather, wet your shaving brush, swirl it over the soap, and apply the resulting lather to your face in circular motions. This process lifts and softens the hair for a smoother shave.

Do you need to warm the shaving soap up first?

While not mandatory, warming the soap in warm water for a few minutes can enhance the lathering experience. This softens the soap, making it easier to generate a rich and creamy lather. And it’s much nicer to put warm soap on your face than freezing cold water.

How do you clean your soap after use?

After shaving, rinse off excess lather from the soap, allowing it to air dry. Ensure it's kept in a well-ventilated area to prevent moisture buildup, preserving the soap's longevity.

How do you store shaving soap?

Store your shaving soap in a cool, dry place. Ideal storage includes a soap dish or container with proper drainage, preventing water retention and prolonging the soap's life.

How long does the shaving soap last?

The lifespan of shaving soap varies, but with proper care, a single bar can last several months of regular use, making it a cost-effective option for grooming.

Where can you buy the shaving soap?

At the moment, Miners Shaving Soap can only be bought online - but we offer free shipping so it doesn’t cost you extra.

Miners Shaving Soap offers a barber-level shave and so is stocked in selected barber shops across the UK, but only for the barbers' use.

What’s better, shaving soap or cream (or gel)?

Shaving soap holds a distinct advantage over shaving cream or gel for several reasons, making it the preferred choice for many shaving enthusiasts. The primary benefit lies in the rich and luxurious lather that shaving soap produces.

The solid nature of shaving soap allows for a traditional, time-honoured method of lathering using a shaving brush. This process not only results in a thick, protective lather but also lifts and softens the facial hair, preparing it for a smoother shave.

Miners Shaving soap contains natural ingredients like glycerin, tallow, and coconut oil, which contribute to superior skin hydration and protection. The dense lather provides excellent lubrication, reducing friction and minimising the risk of nicks and irritation.

Additionally, shaving soap typically lasts longer than creams or gels, offering a cost-effective solution in the long run.

Is Miners Shaving Soap suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes - it was developed and refined by doctors for people suffering all manner of dry and sensitive skin conditions, and has been used by people with sensitive skin for over 30 years.

Is shaving soap safe?

Miners Shaving Soap is incredibly safe - just make sure you don’t get it in your eyes or mouth (like you wouldn't for any cosmetic product). We use natural ingredients in all of our products, but it's still possible to experience an adverse reaction to certain elements. If any reaction or skin irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult with a medical professional.

Can you use normal soap to shave with?

While possible, regular soap may lack the lubrication and protection provided by specialised shaving soaps like Miners. Using dedicated shaving products enhances the overall comfort of the shaving experience.

Is tallow good for shaving?

Tallow, in Miners Shaving Soaps and commonly found in quality shaving soaps, is prized for its moisturising properties. It contributes to a smooth and comfortable shave, leaving the skin hydrated and nourished. During soap production, tallow is saponified into Sodium Tallowate. Our process of making soap uses 'superfatting' a technique to keep some of the natural oils in the soap, to create a better bar.

Is coconut oil good for shaving?

Yes, coconut oil, present in Miners soaps is included in high quality shaving products for its natural moisturising and skin-nourishing qualities. It helps provide a smooth glide and contributes to post-shave skin health. During saponification (soap making process), coconut oil is converted into Sodium Cocoate. Our process of making soap uses 'superfatting' a technique to keep some of the natural oils in the soap, to create a better bar.

Is glycerin good for shaving?

Glycerin is a key ingredient in many high-quality shaving soaps and creams, including Miners Shaving Soap. Its properties contribute to a smooth shave by providing lubrication and helping the skin retain moisture for a comfortable experience.

Can you use shaving soap daily?

Absolutely. Shaving soap is designed for daily use, offering a consistent and enjoyable shaving experience when used correctly. Incorporating it into your daily grooming routine ensures a smooth and comfortable shave each time.

What does curing mean?

We manufacture our soap using the Cold Process method of production. After the soap has been made, it is cut to size and then cured for at least 60 days. This is where the soap is allowed to rest in a well ventilated room to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

The result is a much harder bar which lasts longer, produces a better lather and is gentler on the skin.

What does it smell like?

Miners Natural Soap is unscented. Our experience has shown that adding chemicals and fragrances to soap can irritate the skin.

Is shipping really free?

Yes - we ship anywhere in the UK for free, using the Royal Mail delivery network.

I've been charged for my shipping, what do I do?

Please don’t worry - we will refund the excess postage charge. Some of our products have been made to fit Royal Mail Large Letter sizes. The Natural Soap and Shaving Soap are both made to be 85g and have 15g of packaging. Sometimes the bar may be a little bigger and so it takes the whole product over 100g, which can incur a postage charge if we miss this when shipping. If this has happened to you, please let us know by sending us an email and include a receipt of the surcharge. We will refund you the difference.
